If your energy bills have been rising without a clear explanation, your HVAC system could be the culprit. An inefficient system will work harder to maintain your desired temperature, leading to higher energy consumption. Common reasons for increased energy costs include:

If your HVAC system is running but the airflow seems weak or inconsistent, it may be time for professional attention. This issue could be caused by:

An HVAC system that turns on and off too frequently (short cycling) or runs non-stop is a red flag. This could be due to:

            Refrigerant issues

            An improperly sized unit

Air balancing will help deliver the correct amount of hot or cold air to every room in your home. Learn a few tips about balancing the temperature.

If you own an HVAC system, one concept you should understand is air balancing. Air balancing will help improve your efficiency and positively impact the performance of your heating and cooling system. The process of air balancing helps to deliver the correct amount of hot or cold air to every room to increase comfort levels.

An HVAC technician will test and adjust the system by looking at the intake and output of the system. However, there are some things you can do to balance the air in your home, including the following.

            Open or Close the Register

This is one of the easiest ways to balance the air in your home. The process restricts the air flow in a room. Be sure to not close the vents completely, or you could create other problems for the system. This process is especially helpful to homes with more than one level.

When the weather is hot, open the registers on the top floor. Partially close the registers on the lower level or in the basement. When the weather is cold, do the opposite procedure. Hot air rises, so taking these steps will help better circulate the air throughout the home and keep every room comfortable.

            Cover the Windows

Another way to balance the air in the home is through window coverings. The windows in a house have a significant impact on the comfort levels of the interior temperature. If your windows do not have drapes or shades, your room temperature will quickly increase during the summer. In winter, the cold air can penetrate through the windows, making the air near them colder.

Move Electronics Away From the Thermostat

Electronic equipment gets very hot. When you have many electronics running at one time in a room, it can heat the temperature rapidly. To help balance the air in these rooms, be sure to locate your electronics away from the thermostat. If you place hot electronics near a thermostat, the thermostat will read the temperature nearest to it and will cycle accordingly.

If you do not adjust accordingly, the result will be one room with warmer air while the others are much colder in the summer. In the winter, the other rooms will also be affected while the room containing the electronics and thermostat will maintain a comfortable temperature. This results in your system working harder and increased energy bills.

Try to keep your entertainment center, computer desk, large-screen televisions, and the like on a wall opposite of your thermostat. This will help better distribute the heat in a room and help reduce the additional cycling of your air conditioner.

            Remove Obstacles From the Airways

When you arrange furniture in a room, be sure to keep it away from any air vents on the floor or walls. If you block the vents, the system cannot effectively cool or heat the room.

If you are unable to open the flow of air, purchase a magnetic air deflector. The deflector will help blow the air away from the obstacle and help improve the air circulation in the room.

             Leave the Fan Setting On

Check your thermostat for its fan options. Most thermostat models have an on and auto setting. When you leave the fan on, the air will continually blow and replace the indoor air. This will help balance the air better than if you leave it on the auto setting.

Taking these steps can increase the comfort level in your home's temperature. If you have taken these steps and do not notice an improvement, please call

Heating & Cooling, LLC" title="Air Conditioning - Woman Relaxing At The Living Room in Fredericksburg, VA-I.C.E. Heating & Cooling, LLC"/>

You want to be comfortable inside your home, which means a good temperature and healthy, clean air. Unfortunately, neglecting your HVAC system can reduce the efficiency of the system and allow irritants to invade your indoor air. Luckily, you can prevent these complications in a lot of ways, so check out these three HVAC tips for better indoor air quality.

            1. Keep the Filter Clean

How often you need to clean your filter depends on a few factors. First, the type of filter matters. Some inexpensive fiberglass filters may only last about 30 days. On the other hand, a high-end filter may not need changing for six months or longer.

If you keep your filter clean but still have irritants in the living area, consider switching to a HEPA filter. HEPA filters clean more because they can trap particles as small as

             0.3 micron

. On average, these filters remove about 99.97 percent of the microns in the air.

            2. Clean Your Ducts

Keeping the filter clean is not enough. Eventually, dust and other irritants will collect in the ducts and blow into your living space each time you use the system. Cleaning ducts is not too difficult, but you need special tools to clean the entire system, which is why most homeowners prefer to high a professional.

Use a professional for cleaning because they can also spot and repair damaged ducts, which can affect the efficiency of your system. If your system causes moisture to build inside the ducts, you may also develop mold and mildew, which can make the air smelly and lead to breathing and skin reactions.

Not just dust and allergens can get inside your ducts. Pests can get inside there too. Their fecal matter sends unpleasant smells and potentially dangerous chemicals through the vents. As the animals die in the vents, the problem worsens. A good cleaning can spot and remove any pest infestations.

            3. Choose a System With Special Features

If you are in the market for a new system, consider special features. Some HVAC systems actually have air purifiers. This may be a great feature if you have allergies or breathing complications, or if you have a lot of allergens in the air from pets.

In dry climates, low humidity is a problem. Not having enough humidity in your indoor air may cause a sore throat, itchy skin, or dry eyes. It can also cause damage to items, such as causing small cracks in your wooden cabinets as the wood becomes too dry. If this is your problem, look about getting a HVAC system that humidifies the air.

On the other hand, in areas with too much humidity, excess moisture can cause swelling of wood and mold growth. For this reason, some HVAC systems will remove moisture from the air so the indoor air is less humid.

Fredericksburg, VA, and the surrounding area can get hot and humid in the summer. In order to stay comfortable in your home during the hottest and most humid months of the year, you might need to run your air conditioner all day and night.

Since much warmer temperatures are right around the corner, you need to make sure your air conditioner runs at optimum capacity. If the AC does not work properly, this could be due to a number of reasons. Some problems will require air conditioning repair, but other situations may call for a complete replacement.

Knowing when to either make repairs to your air conditioner or replace it is often a difficult decision. To help you with this, here are five things you should know about AC replacement.

            1. Know How Long Air Conditioners Last

One of the first things to figure out is how long you have had your air conditioner. If your AC unit is older, a replacement is likely necessary. Most air conditioners last between

            10 and 15 years

           .

Not only do older air conditioners require frequent repairs, but also they are not as energy-efficient, which are the main reasons to replace your old one. Another reason to replace it sooner rather than later is that not having reliable AC in the hot and humid weather could be detrimental to your health.

            2. Know the Signs for AC Replacement

Besides knowing how old your air conditioner is, other telltale signs that AC replacement might be near include:

             It makes strange sounds.

It does not blow out cold air right away or any air at all.

It blows out foul-smelling air or has a burning smell.

If you notice leakage around your unit, the refrigerant likely has a leak. Refrigerant contains Freon, which is considered a toxic substance. Exposure to refrigerant can cause health issues, such as respiratory problems, dizziness, headaches, and even organ damage.

            3. Know the Cost of AC Replacement

Like most home appliances, air conditioners vary in cost, which usually depends on the brand, size, and type of unit. If you replace your central air conditioning system, the price could cost anywhere between $3,350 and $5,912. The

If you simply replace your window unit, the price could be as little as $234. A brand-new ductless mini split air conditioner ranges in price from $660 to $4,500.

            4. Know How a New AC Unit Can Help You Save Money

Even though you may have to pay a lot of money upfront when you replace your air conditioner, a new one will save you money in the long run. This is especially true if you get a new air conditioner with a higher Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating than the one you currently have.

Depending on the SEER rating of your old air conditioner compared the new one, you have a huge potential to use less electricity and reduce your energy bill. In some instances, new energy-efficient air conditioners can save you up to $300 a year on energy costs.

To save the most amount of money possible, make sure you get the right size air conditioner for your home. Additionally, if you install a new central air conditioner, a programmable thermostat can also help you save money.

            5. Know Who to Contact about AC Replacement

Your furnace is designed to last for years, but regular wear and tear and poor maintenance can cause it to become less effective overtime. In some cases, a good repair can go a long way, but if your furnace is getting older, it may need a total replacement. Check out these four signs your furnace may need repairs or replacement.

            1. You Can't Get Warm Enough

If you turn on your furnace, but the temperature never seems to reach a comfortable level, there may be a few things wrong. Ideally, the cause is your thermostat. Thermostats can malfunction because of blown fuses, loose wiring, etc. If this is the case, and your furnace isn't too old, you may simply be able to replace the thermostat.

The problem may be deeper, however. If you can't get warm because the furnace doesn’t blow enough air through the vents, the fans, belts, or motor could have a problem.

In addition, the system may actually start blowing cold air, which can indicate a problem with the pilot light or thermocouple. Depending on the extent of damage and the age your system, you may be able to have it repaired.

            2. The Indoor Air Quality is Bad

Many furnaces don't just heat your air, they also improve the quality of the indoor air. But as they age and get worn down, they become less and less effective. In fact, they may start pushing unhealthy debris or gases into your breathing space. If the filter or ducts haven't been cleaned, the system can push dust and allergens into the breathing air, which can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs.

When your furnace starts breaking down, it also doesn't do a good job of humidifying the air, so the air may become dry, which can worsen allergies and breathing problems.

Most importantly, a worn-down furnace could start emitting gas or carbon monoxide. You may smell the gas because of the additives, but you can't smell or see carbon monoxide.

            3. You Hear Strange Sounds

If you suspect a problem with your furnace, take a listen to it. Furnaces can be loud, but the noises should be familiar and consistent. The following are some abnormal noises you may need to worry about:

Banging or booming. This is often caused by a dirty burner. This happens because the dirty burner delays the ignition, which allows excess gas to build. When the ignition finally happens, the excess gas explodes.

Metal scraping against metal. This can also indicate something is wrong, and it usually indicates something has become loose, such as the blower fan.

High-pitched squealing. This sound can mean there may be damage to the blower belts, or something may need to be lubricated.

Rattling. This sound isn't always a cause for concern because it can often be a loose screw, but it may also indicate damage to the heat exchanger.

Keep an ear out for unusual sounds, and call a professional as soon as possible if your furnace needs attention.

            4. The Burner Flame Is the Wrong Color

If you look at the flame inside your furnace, it should be blue. Blue flames are hotter than yellow flames, so if you see yellow flames instead, contact a HVAC technician immediately. A yellow flame usually indicates that the combustion is incomplete. This doesn't just affect the warmth inside your home; it can put you and your family in danger.

When combustion is incomplete, it can often be caused by leaking gas or leaking carbon monoxide. It's always best to have a carbon monoxide tester near the furnace, but if you don't, you may spot some signs of carbon monoxide, such as streaks of soot around the furnace.
